3rd Meeting of the Ticks & TBD WG, Kick off meeting of the FCR "ResisT" project

The 3rd meeting of the Ticks and Tick borne Diseases (T&TBDs) working group of CaribVET will be held CIRAD/INRA campus, Prise d’eau, Guadeloupe, from November 26th to 28th 2013.

It will be organized jointly with the Kick off Meeting of the “ResisT” project “Assessment of Ticks Resistance to Acaricides in the Caribbean - Development of strategies to improve surveillance and control of tick-borne diseases in ruminants”.  This Project funded by the Fond de Coopération Régionale of Guadeloupe and Martinique officially started in June 2013 and will run for 2 years.

Partners of the project and T&TBDs WG members are expected to participate. Several experts will attend the meeting as observers: Dr. Leonore Lovis (Novartis) who is an expert on ticks resistance, and Dr. Nathalie Vachiery (CIRAD Guadeloupe), expert on heartwater and TBD’s diagnostic. Official representatives and animal health stakeholders of Guadeloupe are invited to attend the first day for the opening ceremony, presentation of the ResisT project as well as first results obtained in the French department.

The main objectives of the meeting are:

- To review the situation re ticks infestation and Tick borne diseases in the Caribbean and discuss more particularly activities of the ResisT project in terms of diagnostic capabilities, surveillance, prevention in the Caribbean.

- To present first achievements of the ResisT Project, most especially dealing with the pilot projects of Martinique and Nevis.

- To organise regional activities on the project and finalize a workplan for the group.
