First detection in 2016 of Highly pathogenic H7N8 Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The outbreak appeared the 16th January, 2016 in a commercial turkey flock in Dubois County, Indiana. In 2015, USA experienced a number of influenza outbreaks (232 outbreaks in 15 states, last outbreak was detected June 17) and Indiana reported one outbreak in a backyard flock affecting 76 birds.

The strain involved in this outbreak is different from the strains involved in 2015 outbreak. Further investigations tend to show that this highly pathogenic strain mutated from a low pathogenic one.

There are no known cases of H7N8 infections in humans.
